Versatile community reporter

The Wake Weekly
Wake Forest, North Carolina

The Wake Weekly is moving quickly to hire an energetic and enthusiastic reporter to join our newsroom. The ideal candidate has experience working independently and thriving in a fast-paced environment.

This writer will compose breaking hard-news stories, long-form features and community briefs for our Friday print editions. With a large coverage area, we need someone versatile who can report it all: crime, government, business, health, politics, events, education and more.

This position will be an essential member of our newsroom team who will be counted on to own their beat and turn in clean copy under deadline. The reporter will also have the freedom to pursue personal projects, such as an in-depth investigative piece, in their free time.

COMPANY

The Wake Weekly, founded in 1947, is part of Restoration NewsMedia, a joint venture of two family-owned North Carolina dailies working to preserve and restore authentic community journalism.

Based in Wake Forest, the paper also covers the Wake County towns of Rolesville, Knightdale, Zebulon and Wendell, as well as parts of Franklin County. Our company and audience are growing and the right person can develop their skills and grow with us. This full-time position includes benefits.

• Get out of the office, meet strangers, ask the hard questions and fight for the public’s right to know.

• Break news online as it happens; respond to the scenes of crashes, fires and violent crime.

• Attend meetings of several governing boards each month, which usually are at night.

• Use social media to build an audience, find stories and promote your work.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field.

• Prior experience working in a community newsroom a plus.

• Dependable, always meets deadlines and acts with journalistic integrity.

• Thorough understanding of newsworthiness, story structure and AP style.

• Comfortable working whenever news happens: early mornings, late evenings and occasional weekends as needed.
