Former Gazette Editor Bill Williams dies

Over the four decades that he helped to shape the identity of Gaston County’s primary source of news, former Editor Bill Williams might have been best known for the weekly, down-to-earth columns he wrote for what was formerly known as The Gastonia Gazette.

The level of detail included in that regular feature prompted those who best knew the venerable newspaperman to watch what they said around him.

“People really got to know Bill through his column,” said Jennie Lambert, who was hired by Williams at The Gazette in 1976 and also later became editor and publisher of the paper. “He wrote about his beloved hometown of Faith. He wrote about life at Lake Lure. He wrote about the comings and goings of his friends, his neighbors, his fellow members of Holy Trinity (Lutheran Church) – anyone he ran into.
