Poynter Institute and Craig Newmark Philanthropies to launch a new center on ethics

More than ever, journalists are faced with ethical dilemmas. They have to decide between exposing the truth in the face of graphic information. They are also responsible for combatting misinformation, which is becoming increasingly harder.

Poynter is creating a center for ethics and leadership to help journalists meet these challenges. The center will conduct research on ethics, train reporters and cover media ethics as its own beat, which will be distributed online and in a newsletter.

The grant Poynter received to fund the center will also go toward a fellowship for a journalist to complete media ethics research and share it with organizations around the world. Some topics the center might teach include editorial independence as news organizations find other revenue sources, how to not alienate audiences when reporting about different cultures and improving the information that is exchanged over social media.
